Latifi ends year-long drought and wins his second F2 race

Latifi’s last win was at Silverstone, 2017

In a race that got exciting in the final laps, Latifi started first and gradually extended his lead to win comfortably.

At the start of the formation lap, in cool but dry conditions, Lorandi stalled and caused the two cars right behind him, Boccolacci and Fuoco, to stall too as they stopped to avoid hitting him. They started from the pit lane.

The race start saw one main character: Nyck de Vries. The Dutchman, winner of yesterday’s feature race, jumped from eighth to third in the short run to La Source, while Latifi narrowly kept his lead over Ghiotto.

Norris was ahead of Markelov before Eaur Rouge, but on the Kemmel straight the Russian breezed past. Nissany, with his best starting position of the year, delayed Russell and Camara, before the pair could pass him.

On lap 5 Ghiotto was passed by de Vries, who could not cut into Latifi’s lead. Two laps later the Italian was passed by Norris, and two more laps passed before he was passed by Markelov, and one lap later Albon demoted him further. All four moves came with DRS on the Kemmel straight.

Günther was having a hard life on his medium tyres and after dropping like a stone, being passed by Maini into turn 14, he pitted for softs.

On lap 16 Albon came from far behind to pass Markelov at Les Combes, and caught up to Norris while dragging Markelov with him. The Briton was catching de Vries but was too far back to pass him at the end of the Kemmel straight on lap 17.

On the final lap Norris and Albon used DRS to pass de Vries, who spent the rest of the lap defending from Markelov, the pair coming close to contact while exiting the Bus Stop chicane. Albon was on Norris’ tail but had to settle for third while his team mate overturned his lacklustre season with a decent showing to win his second F2/GP2 race.
