The top three in the championship took up the top three spots in practice.
Latifi led the session early on, and spent the rest of his laps to improve on that time, eventually becoming the only driver to dip below the 1:22s.
Matsushita hit trouble after only nine laps when his car stopped on track in sector 2, with only a VSC required for the marshals to recover it. Alesi and Hubert ran deep at different corners but managed to spin around in the escape road and rejoin the action. The final minutes were ran on the super soft compound, and de Vries and Ghiotto managed to get close to the championship leader. In the end, though, only the top seven drivers were within a second of the leader, and only the top thirteen within two seconds.
Qualifying will begin before lunch, with the cars divided in two groups: the ballot has said that the odd-numbered cars will go first, in group A, followed by the even-numbered cars. Each session will be half as long as an usual qualifying session. The championship top three are all in group B, while the chasing three are all in group A.
