Zandvoort replaces Paul Ricard on 2020 calendar

Zandvoort will return to the F1 calendar and F2 and F3 will visit it for the first time

2020 will be made up of 12 rounds from late March to late November.

The 2020 calendar introduces one new circuit, Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The Dutch circuit is returning to the F1 calendar for the first time since 1985, and will host F2 and F3 as well.

The French round at Paul Ricard has been dropped to make way for it, and to keep the total number of races the same. The circuit re-joined the F1 calendar in 2018 and has hosted F2 only twice for races, but has seen lots of testing even when F2 was still called GP2.

The Baku round will move from the second to the fifth slot as its date shifts to early June.

All 12 rounds will support F1 Grands Prix. Formula 3 will join the two series at nine of these twelve circuits, with Baku and Yas Marina left out due to their greater distance from Europe and Monte Carlo left out as it would be hard to accomodate a further four sessions in an already tight schedule, and when GP3 raced there once there were safety concerns due to the high number of cars and the limited experience of the drivers.

“We kept the number of events to the same amount as the previous two years as we have found the right balance between European rounds and overseas race weekends,” said F2 CEO Bruno Michel.

“I can confirm that more tracks would have liked to have F2 race there, but as always, we want to ensure that our Championship remains affordable by keeping the costs under control and thus the number of events to a total of twelve.”
