Latifi beats de Vries at the Hungaroring

This is the Candian’s fourth win in 2019, the first since Catalunya

The race finished behind the Safety Car due to Boschung stopping on track four laps before the chequered flag.

De Vries and Ghiotto got off the line well, but fighting each other they ended up wide at turn 1 and promoted Latifi into the lead. Aitken rose to fifth behind Schumacher, while Hubert climbed up to thirteenth on the first lap. On the third lap the Carlin of Louis Deletraz went up in smoke on the pit straight.

De Vries pitted first but Latifi had enough of a gap to stay ahead despite stopping one lap later; Aitken jumped Schumacher in the pit lane thanks to his pit crew, while Ghiotto also lost out to the Campos driver. The team’s other car, Maini’s, came to a halt in the gravel after technical troubles.

Latifi was able to make his way through traffic (the drivers yet to stop) quicker than de Vries, and built a safety gap. Ghiotto couldn’t keep up to Aitken’s pace and dropped into Matsushita and Camara’s grasps. The Italian fended off an attack and left the Japanese vulnerable, as he lost out to both the Brazilian and Jordan King, who had just pitted.

A Safety Car was deployed when Boschung’s return to F2 ended up in smoke in the run to turn 4. There was no time to resume the action before the flag and the race finished in anti-climatic fashion.

Ghiotto and King were handed five-second time penalties for VSC infringements, but after the race these were reversed and changed into reprimands; therefore, Ghiotto kept his fourth place and King kept his sixth place.
